Reaching for the wine list is always a pleasure. Choosing a red, white or rosé to complement great local food on holiday is even better. Eating out in Mallorca means eating well. Local wines are up there with some of the greats too. Spanish wine has steadily grown in popularity, and Mallorcan wine is no wallflower on the wine list.

Come on in, inland

Drive inland and you’ll see neat rows of vines covering the pretty landscape of Mallorca. Discovering the wines of Mallorca is just another reason to visit this winning destination.  Tear yourself away, if you can, from the coves and beaches of the spectacular coastline and explore more. Mallorcan wines are not hugely exported, so discover the pleasure of tasting at source. The wine growing regions are Binissalem in the centre of the island, and Pla i Llevant on the central-eastern side. Wines themselves are grouped around three main labels; Vi de la Terra Mallorca, Vi de la Terra Serra de Tramuntana – Costa Nord, and Vi de la Terra Illes Balears.

A matter of taste

Whether to choose red, white or rosé/rosado is simply a matter of taste in Spain or anywhere else. Diehard traditionalists will insist it depends on the food, but sometimes it just feels right to go for what you really like. That’s not a dilemma in Mallorca. We have carefully chosen three of the best, worthy Mallorcan wines for you to sample. There’s one of each type to suit every course. Pass your glass!

Red

Macià Batle Tinto Añada

Why? Using the local grape variety of manto negro, and blending it with French grapes (as is common here) this a red for an autumnal dish. Perfect for that walking holiday in the coming months, with floral notes and gutsy cherry flavour. It was also named as one of the Best island Wines by a recent article in the Guardian.

White

Quíbia – 2011

Why? This is a barrel aged white, and simply must be tried. If you’re a fan of chowders and hearty fish stews, then this is the perfect pairing wine. Straw golden in colour, its citrus notes will slice through creamy dishes with a dry, fresh finish.

Rosado or Rosé

Ribas Rosat – 2016.

Why? Young, fresh and fruity, with a citrus kick, it goes down well, chilled, on a warm sunny Mallorcan day. Bodegas Ribas is one of the oldest wineries on the island, with a solid reputation. Well worth buying at source, and sipping back at your timeshare accommodation.
